When Daniel met Ingrid

Daniel met Ingrid on the beach in Agadir in December 1969. About a month later they decided to travel together. They had no intention of staying together: they just happened to be travelling in the same direction for a while…. But when they reached the fork in the road they decided they wanted to stay together a bit longer….. Five days to do a 1 ½ day trip across desert – in a van heading for Osaka via Africa. It was equipped with 2 wooden benches and the only tools were a spanner and a hammer. The first night in the desert was nearly the last – the drivers, two Argentinian journalists, wanted to drive at night. After a couple of hours Daniel pointed out that they were going round in a circle – when they agreed to stop it was two metres from the edge of a cliff..... It quickly became apparent that the intrepid van was highly unlikely to reach its destination - so reluctantly they left it, but spent a month in the small desert town of Tarfaya before returning to Agadir. In Tarfaya their passports were enigmatically stamped "vue de passage..." (seen passing ....) This turned out to be very useful as they were challenged on leaving from Oujda for having overstayed by one month.... Daniel had a great ability to think on his feet. In an attempt to clear the beach of hippies the police took them to the gendarmerie where the chief tried to evict them on the spurious charge of not having a tent – they had erected a shelter they called a tent (a folded sheet). Daniel asked them for written notice - which put them in a quandary, and then spun them a wonderful yarn about joining a caravan going to an annual festival in the middle of the Sahara about 5 weeks later... They were so impressed they dropped charges; but not without one last half-hearted attempt. Money. Daniel and Ingrid did a hasty calculation of their finances and doubled it a couple of times - luckily the figure was accepted unchallenged. Kunden says fortunately for her their roads continued together for a lot longer. Travels took them through many countries before they finally settled in London, England.
